Bring The Pain

Since when did pain become a bad word?

It has officially joined the ranks of current misunderstood words like work, ambition, and commitment.

In today’s world we all try to avoid pain. What is the least painful path to get from A to B? What is the easy way to succeed, get in shape, and learn? Too often, the path of least resistance causes us to miss some valuable growth and learning opportunities. I am not saying to seek it out. I am simply saying embrace it. Relish who you become as a result. Pain is a wonderful teacher.

What if a child didn’t feel pain after touching a hot stove? What would happen if  it didn’t hurt a little when they fall down trying to walk?

When I learned to surf, part of my motivation for standing up properly was to avoid the pain of wiping out. I remember the pain of not qualifying for the first tournament on my college golf team.  I thought I would waltz into a starting slot after being successful the previous summer.  I can still feel the burn as the team packed up the van to travel and I had to stay behind. That burn helped me develop a work ethic which surpassed everyone else on the team. I never missed another tournament.

Pain produces character. Pain prevents weakness. Pain teaches us to overcome.

Let 2010 be a year where pain is our tutor. Learn from it. Become who you are meant to be.

What’s your take?

Akash. Thanks. I appreciate you stopping by. I have learned one pain of success is discipline. However, it sure beats the pain of regret.

Hi David, Fantastic post I was looking for something with an out of the box message got it here, You are true its very important to embrace pain and pursue failure then only we can make the essence of success better.

great analogy! thank you for pointing out that discernment is key. it is a type of wisdom. In “The Noticer” (by Andy Adrews), a character talks about wisdom being able to know the future consequences of our actions. Your comment makes me think of “pain” and “damage” as a product of that. I appreciate your always valuable perspective.

Another good analogy? There’s pain that tells you to GO, and pain that tells you to STOP. Knowing the difference is pretty important. It’s what keeps “pain” from becoming “damage.”

    Good stuff. :)

thanks Charles. I am excited for the opportunities ahead of you. In the words of Jimmy Dugan, (Tom Hanks in League of There Own), “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard… is what makes it great.” Get ready for great things in 2010. The masses will not overcome the pain like you are doing. (nice pot roast by the way :)

Great post, it’s inspired me to do one of my own along the same lines. I am in the early stages of a career transition. Maybe I’m crazy, but at this point I am actively seeking out the pain. The painful parts are the most exciting because they are growth opportunities. :-)

Good ultimate fighting submission in pic (arm bar)!

Pain, like enemies, are hard to love, but doing so makes us better.

    Thanks David!

Thanks Jon. I appreciate you stopping by. I enjoyed checking out your golf blog, atruegolfer.com. The simpson’s ref in “give your putter a name” was clever.
